five years ago:

mission_accomplished-080430a

It was five years ago that President Bush stood on the deck of the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln under a banner which read "Mission Accomplished". Later on June 5th, 2003, Mr Bush said to troops in Iraq "America sent you on a mission to remove a grave threat and to liberate an oppressed people, and that mission has been accomplished."

Recent news is that 1 in 5 troops suffer PTSD and other mental problems. The GI bill does not always provide for troops as they were told it would. The news that really got me was that 18 veterans (from all wars, not just Iraq and Afghanistan) commit suicide every day.

What mission did we accomplish?

bright eyes

four winds

Bright Eyes: "When the President Talks to God"

When the president talks to God
Are the conversations brief or long?
Does he ask to rape our women's' rights
And send poor farm kids off to die?
Does God suggest an oil hike
When the president talks to God?

When the president talks to God
Are the consonants all hard or soft?
Is he resolute all down the line?
Is every issue black or white?
Does what God say ever change his mind
When the president talks to God?

When the president talks to God
Does he fake that drawl or merely nod?
Agree which convicts should be killed?
Where prisons should be built and filled?
Which voter fraud must be concealed
When the president talks to God?

When the president talks to God
I wonder which one plays the better cop
We should find some jobs. the ghetto's broke
No, they're lazy, George, I say we don't
Just give 'em more liquor stores and dirty coke
That's what God recommends

When the president talks to God
Do they drink near beer and go play golf
While they pick which countries to invade
Which Muslim souls still can be saved?
I guess god just calls a spade a spade
When the president talks to God

When the president talks to God
Does he ever think that maybe he's not?
That that voice is just inside his head
When he kneels next to the presidential bed
Does he ever smell his own bullshit
When the president talks to God?

I doubt it

I doubt it

pretty good stuff

Mr. Hunter is a great judge of character. His close friend and protégé, Randal Cunningham was convicted of bribery and other charges. Cunningham received a sentence of over eight years, the longest sentence ever for a Congressman.

Hunter reminds me of the line from The Manchurian Candidate: "Dick Cheney is the kindest, bravest, warmest, most wonderful human being I've ever known in my life." link .

Early on the morning of April 26, for the FIRST time we will outline "IMPEACH BOTH!!!" in 100-foot letters in the sand of Ocean Beach in San Francisco. prisoner 345

torture_always_wrong_083

I was reading this story: The Torture Drawings the Pentagon Doesn't Want You to See about Sami Al-Hajj, prisoner 345 at Guantanamo and found this web site about him: prisoner 345 and thought the graphic looked familiar. This is one of the first signs I painted back in December 2005.

on the beach

on_the_beach-1140074

'On the Beach' is a great novel by Nevil Shute written in 1957. He also wrote the book 'A Town Like Alice' which included the subject of torture.

'On the Beach' is about the results of nuclear war. In the book the war is started by Albania and Egypt. The US mistakes the Egyptian bombers for Russians and attacks Russia. China attacks Russia in a land grab. Over 4,700 nuclear bombs explode and the population of the Northern Hemisphere is wiped out by the blasts and the radioactive fallout.

The fallout spreads south eventually killing the last remaining people in South America, southern Africa and finally Australia.

from todays news: Local Nuke War Would Cause World Havoc

I love this part about the "media". remember this is from 1957:

page 229

"Couldn't anyone have stopped it?"

"I don't know . . . . Some kinds of silliness you just can't stop," he said. "I mean, if a couple of hundred million people all decide that their national honour requires them t drop cobalt bombs upon their neighbour, well, there's not much that you or I can do about it. the only possible hope would have been to educate them out of their silliness."

"But how could you have done that, Peter? I mean, they'd all left school."

page 230

"Newspapers," he said. "You could have done something with newspapers. We didn't do it. No nation did, because we were all too silly. We liked our newspapers with pictures of beach girls and headlines about cases of indecent assault, and no government was wise enough to stop us having them that way. But something might have been done with newspapers, if we'd been wise enough."

She did not fully comprehend his reasoning. "I'm glad we haven't got newspapers now," she said. "It's been much nicer without them."

wow! a great tune

Paul McCartney made a great film called "The Real Buddy Holly Story". Buddy Holly died in a plane crash while on tour in 1959 (many people call this the day the music died). Buddy Holly and the Crickets were the first singer/song writers. The first hit tune the Rolling Stones recorded was 'Rave On'. In the film Kieth Richards says: "No, the music never died. the music will always live on." This clip from the film is proof of that. A great tune and a great performance. Long live rock and roll!

Johanna Tukiainen

OK. Just this year, so far, there has been Spitzer. Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick has been progressively self destructing and it was revealed he sent 14,000 racy text messages to his chief of staff with whom he was having an affair. When I read the story about Finnish Foreign Minister Ilkka Kanerva was forced to quit his job yesterday after he admitted bombarding a stripper (the lovely Johanna Tukiainen, pictured above) with mobile phone text messages of a sexual nature, I thought it was an April Fools parody of Kilpatrick's problems. But wait! This just in! From the Detroit suburbs: Radio executive Tom Athans, husband of U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow, CAUGHT IN HOOKER STING!

Just a couple of high lights: Spritzer spent thousands per night, in Detroit it's $150 for a half hour. It's the third time around for the Finnish Minister. Kilpatrick's saga also involves wild parties in the mayors mansion and a stripper who was killed.

How did these people run amok like this?
